What attracted you to a career as a stylist?
I always knew this was my future. I just knew it! I’ve always been interested in the hair and make-up industry for as long as I can remember. In high school, I worked in a salon after school and went straight into beauty school after graduation.
How long have you been a stylist?
I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for twelve years and a certified educator for nine years.
Tell me about your salon.
I have an in-home salon. M clients are other moms from my school community and their daughters. Most of my business is word of mouth, so I like to stay involved, volunteer, and get out and meet people. My daughter is in cheer leading so I meet a lot of cheer moms, too. What motivates you daily?
Working from home is motivating. I know everyone personally. No one is a total stranger. Having that personal connection, I feel involved in their lives. Giving people confidence, making them happy, is inspiring.
How do you approach creating a style for your client? What sort of questions do you ask?
Sometimes, clients get into a rut and I try not to let that happen. I’ll talk to my client about how they can do things differently every visit. Even if it is a small change, like a low light or an inch shorter, it helps them thing about getting out of their comfort zone.
I wear Tony Odisho® extensions, which opens the door for my clients to see how they look. About half request extensions during their visit. I love extensions and I often suggest options that include them.
What do you do to make sure your clients leave feeling happy and beautiful?
Clients need to feel happy during every step of the style process. During their consultation, I gather as much information as possible. I also give them good quality products for at-home care, so that they can remain feeling happy and beautiful. I use Tony Odisho paddle brushes and Ostia® Collection shampoos and conditioners and encourage them to use them, too.
What is your favorite service to perform?
Extensions hands down!
What are some of the reasons you offer extensions?
Extensions can completely change your look in two to three hours. That’s huge! They’re easy and make my clients feel awesome and, for me, hands down, it’s a money maker.
How have extensions impacted your business?
Becoming certified in both fusion and tape extensions with Tony Odisho gave me more confidence to discuss then with clients. I feel so much better educated after taking Tony’s classes! I understand what the bonds are made of, how they expand and contract … so much more than I did when I was just buying! The certification classes allow me to take styles to the next level, and my clients are more comfortable because I am more knowledgeable.
How do you encourage your clients to take care of their hair, including their extensions?
Having a full line of Tony Odisho products to choose from really helps. A small paddle brush is priced into every extension service. Everyone must have it to take care of their hair.
What are some of your favorite “go-to” products?
I love the Beautiful Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner and Flexible Hold Hairspray. A small paddle brush goes home with every client and my daughter and I love them.
