There’s a lot of misinformation floating around the internet in regards to hair extensions, so we thought it was high time to set the record straight! Now there’s a couple of ways to break down this question because there’s no easy answer. The short answer is no. The long answer has to do with brand, maintenance, type of extensions, etc. So buckle up, we’re about to get technical!

Brand

The first factor to take into account when asking if hair extensions damage your hair is brand. Not all extension brands are created equal. And it doesn’t just have to do with the quality of the hair itself (although that is very important). It has to do with the technology used. Tony Odisho’s extensions use tested technology to safely secure the wefts to your natural hair.

Plus our specially formulated removal solutions help ensure that damage during the removal process is slim to nonexistent. Not every brand takes the care we do to ensure the safety of your natural hair!

Type of Extensions

Tony Odisho carries three different types of extensions: Fusion, Tape, and Velo. Our Velo Extensions are made with a double wefted wire suspended clip-in system, so they are virtually damage-free and can be taken in and out by the wearer as desired.

Tape extensions are applied in smaller wefts. Their seamless application technology is safe on hair when applied and maintained correctly. Plus, they last 6-8 weeks and can be reapplied up to two times after the initial application.

Fusion extensions are applied strand by strand and stick a lot longer than tape. They last up to 4 months. Removing them is a more involved process than with tape, but our removal solution is specially made for it, so any TO certified professional hairstylist can remove them with minimal damage.

Application/Removal

Proper application and removal cannot be emphasized enough when it comes to avoiding damage from hair extensions. That’s why Tony Odisho offers such carefully designed, hands-on certification classes. Our classes will leave stylists fully equipped to create a perfect extension application every single time.

Maintenance

Of all the factors that come into play in regards to minimizing damage to hair after wearing extensions, maintenance is the most important. First, we highly recommend only using product from the Ostia Collection hair care line because all of the products in it are specially formulated to be safe on extensions.

We also recommend using our mixed bristle paddle brush at least twice a day to limit tangles and distribute healthy natural oils to your extensions. Additionally, when heat-styling hair, you should always use a heat protectant like our 3-in-1 Mist and avoid placing heat directly onto tape tabs or fusion bonds. For any other questions you have regarding maintenance, be sure to ask your stylist!

So we finally have an answer to the question: do hair extensions damage your hair? It doesn’t have to be as scary or daunting as some folks make it out to be. If you follow these tips, you’re sure to love your hair while you have extensions and after you remove them!

It can be a struggle to make wire suspended clip-in extensions look natural on thick short hair, but rest assured it is possible! It just takes some easy tips and tricks to make it look more blended. In this tutorial, Tony Odisho himself demonstrates how to apply Velo Extensions to thick short hair.

First, clip up most of the hair using Tony Odisho’s double hinged non-slip alligator clips.

If you struggle with giving your flat, lifeless hair the volume of your dreams, you’re in good company! A lot of women deal with this, but it’s easier to fix than you may think. Here are 5 ways to add volume to your hair.

Use Volumizer Shampoo & Conditioner

The Ostia Collection Volumizer Shampoo and Conditioner are an absolute must. They are paraben and sulfate free so they don’t dry out or damage your hair (or make your color fade). Plus, they smell amazing and work well on hair extensions and natural hair alike!

Prep with Volumizing Mousse

Prepping wet hair with Volumizing Mousse is a great way to add volume to your hair. It’s a lightweight foam that enhances your style without getting sticky or stiff. It’s perfect for showcasing your natural hair texture (if you air dry) or giving smooth volume if you blow dry.

Get an Extra Boost With the Root Lifter

If you want some extra volume at your roots, the Root Lifter is the way to go. It gives a major boost of volume while increasing the longevity of your style. Just spray some at your roots while hair is still wet and reap the benefits!

Use Dry Shampoo

A great hack for adding volume to your hair is using Dry Shampoo! Your scalp naturally products sebum and oils to keep your hair moisturized. But these oils can also weigh down the hair as they build up. Dry Shampoo helps you combat this by reducing excess oils to keep hair light and voluminous!

Gently Tease Hair

Using a rat tail comb or teasing brush, gently tease at the roots where you want to add volume to your hair. We strongly emphasize here that you need to do it gently. Teasing too roughly or too often can cause breakage and snarls. So do it sparingly!

Try Extensions

Lastly, a tried and true way to add volume is hair extensions. If you have particularly thin or fine hair, we recommend using Tony Odisho Fusion Extensions. Tony Odisho Tape Extensions are also a good bet if you use our unique, single-sided tape technology so that the extensions don’t weigh down your natural hair.

If your New Year’s resolution is to workout more, welcome to the club. Also you may be wondering the best way to care for your hair extensions if you’re working out regularly. Well no worries on that front. In this post, we’ll break down what to do when working out with hair extensions!

Pre-Workout

Before you work out, secure your hair in your favorite style. Ideally a bun, ponytail or braid. Make sure it’s tight enough to stay in place, but loose enough that it doesn’t cause extra strain on your tape strips or fusion bonds. Lower hairstyles tug the least on your hair extensions.

If your workout involves swimming, wet your hair and apply conditioner to it from the mid-shaft to ends. This will protect it from getting frizzy and dried out from the chlorine.

If your workout is outdoors, apply 3-in-1 Mist to protect your natural hair and hair extensions from harmful UV rays (plus get the benefit of it being a detangler while offering added shine).

Post Workout

After you’re finished working out for the day, wash your hair with your favorite Ostia Collection shampoo and conditioner. The Ostia Collection is specially formulated to be safe on hair extensions.

If your hair is feeling a bit extra dry (if you swam in chlorinated water, for instance), use the Intense Conditioner because it doubles at a deep moisturizing hair masque. Just let it sit in your hair for 3-5 minutes before thoroughly rinsing it out.

It’s truly that easy to take proper care of your hair while working out with hair extensions. So don’t let the hair care daunt you, catch up on your New Year’s resolution today!

Nine times out of ten, hair extensions are going to be a different texture from your natural hair. Factor in the added thickness and length, and you’ve got a whole new head of hair to figure out how to style. Don’t get overwhelmed, though! If you follow these easy tips and tricks on how to style hair extensions properly, you’ll be just fine.

Use the Right Shampoo/Conditioner

Using the right shampoo and conditioner is critical to styling hair extensions. Luckily the entire Ostia Collection is safe on extensions. All of the products are sulfate and paraben free, so they don’t dry out your natural hair or extensions.

Avoid Air Drying Hair

Regardless of what you may have done prior to having extensions, air drying your hair is no longer an option. Frankly, it shouldn’t have been an option to begin with because very few hair textures look naturally pretty after air drying.

Don’t Blow Dry Lazily

In that same vein, don’t just flip over your hair and rough dry it. You’ll need to dry it section by section with a round brush. This will limit breakage and offer a more well-rounded, less frizzy look.

Always Use 3-in-1 Mist

3-in-1 Mist is an absolute must to style hair extensions properly. It detangles and protects against heat and UV rays. Use it in every style to keep your extensions tangle-free and healthy looking.

Apply Serum

Smoothing Serum will do wonders for your natural hair and extensions. It’s lightweight and adds a gorgeous shine to hair while smoothing out frizz. You don’t necessarily have to use it every day, but we certainly recommend using it around once a week.

Other than these tips, just style your hair like usual. It’s not so daunting once you get started! As our CEO always likes to say: hair extensions don’t require more maintenance than natural hair, just different maintenance.

Despite what many people think, all brushes are not created equal. It’s crucial to use the right brush. Otherwise, you could end up with damaged, broken hair. This is especially important if you have hair extensions, but applies to all hair. Here’s a quick breakdown of the importance of using the right brush.

Have you ever noticed that the brush you brought at the drug store snags and sometimes even pulls out your hair? Your daily hair care can contribute to that, but so can the brush itself. That’s why it’s vital to use a boar bristle brush with two different bristle lengths, like our paddle brush.

This brush gets straight down to your roots and starts detangling from the cuticle rather than just your hair’s ends. Better yet, it’s completely safe on hair extensions and is the preferred brush to care for them! If you’re using the right brush, your hair will detangle but also start to shine from the redistribution of your scalp’s natural oils.

In terms of styling brushes, it’s also extremely important to use a good round brush that evenly distributes your blow dryer’s heat. We recommend one of our Copper Round Brushes for this very reason. These brushes’ pure copper core retains heat and distributes it evenly for a sleek, smooth finish. Plus the long bristles and unique boar strip work in tandem to provide the perfect tension for styling. On top of all that, the tourmaline bristle are built to withstand heat and last quite awhile.

So don’t waste your time or risk damaging your hair by using just any brush! Give it the care it deserves with unique, salon quality brushes from Tony Odisho. We guarantee you’ll be amazed by your hair’s health and vibrancy after using them, whether you have extensions or wear your hair natural.

So you finally took the plunge and got hair extensions. Now what? A lot of women worry that hair extensions are too much work or maintenance but this isn’t the case at all! The reality is that your hair care routine will be different, but not necessarily more extensive. That being said, itt’s very important to make sure you know the ins and outs of maintaining them, though. Here’s everything you need to know about how to care for your new extensions!

Washing

There isn’t a drastic change between how you wash natural hair versus extensions, but it’s important to note that there is a difference. Rather than bunching all of your hair on top of your head when you shampoo, start by gently massaging the shampoo into your scalp. Then work your way downward, in a zigzag motion. Never flip your hair upside down while shampooing! Additionally, you should always use a good conditioner, preferably from the Ostia Collection, to keep hair smooth and moisturized.

Brushing

It’s extremely important to thoroughly brush your hair with an extensions brush at least once in the morning and once every night. It’s also important to brush it correctly. With the Tony Odisho extensions brush, you can brush all the way down to the bond, without damaging your natural hair or extensions. In fact, brushing this way is preferred. It ensures your hair won’t get matted or tangled.

Styling

The difference between how you style your extensions versus your natural hair depends entirely upon the length, fullness, and type of extensions you get. However, one of the main things you’ll notice is that Tony Odisho extensions hold a curl longer than many women’s natural hair and with some dry shampoo, you can go without washing it for up to a week! We also recommend using Smoothing Serum semi-regularly to keep hair moisturized and shiny. Avoid hairstyles that might pull on the extensions like top knots, tight buns, tight ponytails, etc.

Sleeping

So this may seem like a weird thing to mention, but it’s actually an important part of caring for your new extensions. Before bed, make sure to brush your hair for 20 minutes and then put it into a loose, low braid or bun. This will prevent your hair from snagging on the pillow while you sleep and getting tangled/matted. Bonus points if you sleep with a silk pillowcase!

In reality, caring for your new extensions isn’t as difficult or as scary as it may seem. It’s all about different hair maintenance, not necessarily more maintenance. So go ahead and enjoy your gorgeous new locks!
